Right, as promised (although a little bit tardy), the step-by-step guide to creating your very own Olaf Snowman courtesy of our lovely Charlotte. Can I also mention at this time that Charlotte is also know as That Crafty Mummy, who can (for a very reasonable fee) organize kids crafts parties for you in the Bromley area! Please let me know if you want contact details and I shall share – our kids all had a fab time making Olaf, an owl out of CD’s and possibly another 50 items that Charlotte had up her sleeve if I hadn’t removed them!
On with the Olaf…
You will need:
- A man’s sports sock – available at a very reasonable rate from pound shops, sport shops, Primark etc.
- Hollow Fibre Toy Stuffing – available from craft shops, Amazon etc. This is bought by weight and is very light. DO NOT make the mistake I did of buying 4 kilos and leaving the sack in a room with six children. It looked like a snow storm had occurred internally and needed 3 bin bags to put the stuff back in once it had been uncompressed. 500 grams will easily do several Olafs and not create a storage nightmare.
- 2 black or brown pipe cleaners
- 2 googly craft eyes
- 3 buttons
- Orange pom pom
- Black marker pen
- PVA Glue
- 4 looms bands
- Sports Sock
- 1. Fill the bottom part of your sock with wadding to make the snowman’s bottom ball. You will want 3 balls in total so ensure you leave enough sock for the other two! Tie of with a loom band
- 2. Use your stuffing to make a smallish middle ball and tie off with a loom band.
- 3. Stuff his head, you want this bigger than his middle but not so gargantuan that it doesn’t stay upright. Leave enough space to comfortably tie it off with a little sock spare at the top. Tie-off with loom band
- 4. Now take your first pipe cleaner and cut off two 3 cm pieces. Wrap these on each end of the pipe cleaner to make his hands.
- 5. Wrap the arm pipe cleaner just below his head to attach and arrange artistically.
- 6. Next cut three 5cm pieces off your second pipe cleaner. Twist together and affix with loom band to the spare bit of sock at the top of his head to form his hair.
- 7. Attach his eyes with PVA glue.
- 8. Finish with pom pom nose, jacket buttons and some rakish eyebrows and smile!
You’ve built a snowman!
